Substances like opium, tobacco, alcohol, and cocaine were used by colonial powers to dispossess Indigenous lands and peoples. These substances facilitated the expansion of colonialism while disregarding the well-being of Indigenous populations. The War On Drugs is firmly rooted in racism and provided the architecture within which colonialist policies and practices still operate. Globally, Black, Brown and Indigenous people are disproportionately targeted by law enforcement and face discrimination across the criminal system. They face higher rates of arrest, prosecution and incarceration for drug offences, despite similar rates of drug use and trade across races. This is ground zero for Social Justice.
