Substance Information Sheet

Cannabinoids

A cannabinoid is a chemical compound that interacts with cannabinoid receptors on cells to influence neurotransmitter function in the brain. Cannabinoids are classified into three main types:

Endocannabinoids: Naturally produced in the body by humans and animals.

Phytocannabinoids: Found in cannabis and some other plants.

Synthetic Cannabinoids: Chemically manufactured.

The most well-known cannabinoid is the phytocannabinoid delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is the primary psychoactive component of cannabis. Cannabidiol (CBD) is another significant phytocannabinoid that accounts for up to 40% of cannabis resin extracts.

At least 85 different cannabinoids have been identified from cannabis, each with unique effects. Synthetic cannabinoids include several distinct chemical classes:

- Classical Cannabinoids: Structurally similar to THC.

- Nonclassical Cannabinoids (Cannabimimetics): Includes aminoalkyl indoles, 1,5-diarylpyrazoles, quinolines, and arylsulphonamides.

- Eicosanoids: Related to endocannabinoids.

⚠️ Caution ⚠️
These combinations are not usually physically harmful, but may produce undesirable effects, such as physical discomfort or overstimulation. Extreme use may cause physical health issues. Synergistic effects may be unpredictable. Care should be taken when choosing to use this combination.

↗ Low Risk & Synergy ↗
These drugs work together to cause an effect greater than the sum of its parts, and they aren't likely to cause an adverse or undesirable reaction when used carefully. Additional research should always be done before combining drugs.

Alcohol
In excess, this combination can cause nausea.

IMPORTANT SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS

Synthetic cannabinoids have been linked to numerous deaths and are associated with dangerous side effects and toxicity. Their use over extended periods or in high doses is strongly discouraged. Since there's little to no research on humans, the health risks remain largely unknown, and some synthetic

The relationship between cannabis use and psychiatric disorders is complex and requires more research to fully understand its effects on mental health. There is significant evidence suggesting that cannabis use may accelerate the onset of psychosis, particularly in those genetically predisposed to psychotic disorders like schizophrenia, and exacerbate symptoms for those already diagnosed. Although less consistent, studies have also linked cannabis use with other mental illnesses and self-harm, such as suicidal thoughts and behaviors.

People with mental illnesses are more likely to use cannabis, but the exact relationship between mental health symptoms and cannabis use remains unclear. Several factors influence the relationship between cannabis and mental health, such as dosage, frequency of use, potency (THC content), the type of cannabis product, and the age of first use. Furthermore, genetic and environmental factors like family history, trauma, and stress can affect a person's likelihood of using cannabis.

Research indicates that cannabis use is associated with an earlier onset of psychotic disorders in individuals with genetic risk factors. Cannabis intoxication, especially at high doses, may induce temporary psychotic episodes, increasing the risk of developing a long-term psychotic disorder. Genetic predisposition may play a role in this relationship.

Regarding other mental health conditions, the connection between cannabis use and depression is less certain. Some studies suggest an increased risk of depression for those using cannabis during adolescence. However, a stronger link has been established between cannabis use and suicidal thoughts and behaviors among teenagers and U.S. military veterans.

Cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome (CHS) can affect people who use cannabis (marijuana) long-term. CHS causes frequent, severe nausea and vomiting. Hot baths and showers may temporarily relieve symptoms. But the only way to cure CHS is to stop using cannabis.

NAVIGATING CANNABIS HARM REDUCTION

BASIC CANNABIS HARM REDUCTION STRATEGIES

Acknowledge your own limits when it comes to using cannabis.

Occasional use, such as one day per week or less, is safer for your body and

mind than regular use.

Wait until you’re older before trying cannabis, ideally after you turn 25, to protect your developing brain.

Instead of smoking cannabis, consider cannabis products that are safer for your body, such as edibles and oils.

Choose low-potency products, ones with lower THC and/or higher CBD content.

Avoid using cannabis if you’re pregnant, breastfeeding or if you or your family members have a history of psychosis.

Wait at least 6 hours after using cannabis before driving a vehicle or operating machinery.

Mixing alcohol and cannabis makes you more impaired than using cannabis only and can lead to "greenies".

If you choose to smoke cannabis, avoid inhaling deeply or holding your breath.

Don't hesitate to ask your THC or CBD product supplier for certificates proving the contents of the product

Know your source and understand where your cannabis is from. Is it from the regulated or unregulated market?

Avoid mixing with tobacco

Avoid synthetic cannabinoids.  They are dangerous and unregulated.

Cigarette filters have been known to let the bad stuff through and filter out the good sh!t

Reflect on the benefits and risks of using cannabis so that you can make informed choices that are right for you.

Most commercially available CBD products are unregulated and dangerous. Be aware of misleading labelling like "CBD+" or "Full Spectrum CBD". Terms like these are often used as code for THC.

Store your stash well out of reach where children, animals and others cannot access it.
